1971 Alfa Romeo A12 - SOLD

This Alfa Romeo A12 Cabinato is a long-wheelbase truck that was acquired by a previous owner out of Parma, Italy, and relocated to the UK. A subsequent multi-year refurbishment involved adding a drop-side truck bed, repainting the body, and retrimming the interior in addition to reconditioning the 1,290cc twin-cam inline-four, four-speed manual transaxle, and chassis. The truck was acquired by the current owner on BaT February 2019 and imported to the US, where it was shown at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in 2024. Finished in Bluette with a Grigio Indaco roof over red vinyl upholstery, it rides on 16″ steel wheels and is further equipped with front disc brakes as well as a single Solex carburetor.

The cab was reportedly media blasted and sent to a body shop that fabricated and installed a replacement driver-side front corner and floor panels as part of the aforementioned UK refurbishment, while a custom drop-side bed was added out back. An epoxy primer was added before the original color of Grigio Indaco (735) was applied to the roof panel, and period-correct Bluette (327) was used over the rest of the exterior.

The red stripe on the front of the cab is a demarcation for Italian commercial vehicles. The headlamp buckets were copper-plated, polished, silver-plated, and polished. The bed is fitted with E-Track cargo rails, and the aluminum bed panels were repainted

The black-finished 16″ steel wheels wear Alfa Romeo–branded hubcaps and are mounted with Camac tires sized 6.00-16C. Braking is handled by front discs paired with rear drums, which were overhauled in the course of the UK refurbishment. Work under current ownership has involved replacing the pitman arm spherical bearing as well as the drag link.

Updates inside the cab included retrimming the dual bucket seats in red vinyl and adding inertia-reel shoulder belts. Additional work as part of the UK project involved refinishing the dash in crackle black as well as replacing the headliner, weatherstripping, and heater core. Coco-style mats were added under current ownership.

A three-spoke steering wheel frames a Jaeger 120-km/h speedometer with an inset fuel-level readout and warning lights. A water temperature gauge is hidden behind the ashtray and features an audible alarm. The five-digit odometer shows 80k kilometers (~50k miles), approximately 2k of which have been added under current ownership.

The 1,290cc twin-cam inline-four was shared with other Alfa Romeo products of the period and is accessible through a doghouse between the seats

The engine is backed by a floor-shifted four-speed manual transaxle that drives the front wheels. The unit was inspected and resealed as part of the UK refurbishment. Additional work at that time involved repainting the chassis and various suspension components in satin black as well as renewing the steering joints, rebushing the front lower suspension arms, and stripping and reassembling the transverse front leaf spring.
