1964 Volkswagen Type 2 Double Cab Pickup
This 1964 Volkswagen Type 2 was purchased by the current owner in 2012 and was modified in 2025 with a 2,276cc flat-four equipped with dual EMPI carburetors, an electric fuel pump, and electronic ignition. The four-speed manual transaxle was upgraded with altered gearing, and front disc brakes were also installed. The bodywork is finished in Dove Blue and Vintage White over cream upholstery, and additional equipment includes a Wagenswest narrowed front beam, 15″ BRM Speedwell wheels, a Gene Berg shifter, front Safari windows, a roof rack, and fold-down bed sides.
The bus has been repainted in a shade described by the owner as Dove Blue with a Vintage White roof and bumpers. Exterior features include front Safari windows, fold-down bed sides, wood bed slats, a luggage rack, sliding side windows, pop-out rear windows, and dual side mirrors.
The 15″ BRM Speedwell wheels are wrapped in 175/55 Kumho Ecsta KH11 front and 205/65 Yokohama YK420 rear tires. Stopping power is provided by front disc and Type 3 rear drum brakes. The suspension has been lowered and a Wagenswest narrowed front beam was installed in 2016.
The cab features a bench seat that is upholstered in cream vinyl, and additional appointments include a Gene Berg shifter, a storage basket, lap belts with Wolfsburg crests, and a cabin heater.
The two-spoke steering wheel has been refurbished and fronts a 70-mph speedometer and gauges for fuel level, oil temperature, and oil pressure. An AutoMeter tachometer has been mounted overhead. The five-digit odometer shows 23k miles, which is not considered to be accurate. An estimated 750 miles have been accrued on the build.
The 2,276cc flat-four was built by Dam Volks of Boulder City, Nevada, and installed in 2025. The engine features dual EMPI carburetors, an Engle camshaft, 82mm EMPI crankshaft, an aluminum case, a 200mm lightened flywheel, an electric fuel pump, and electronic ignition, and build sheets are provided in the gallery. A custom battery box has been installed.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle, which was reportedly modified with upgraded gearing. The seller tells us that the rear axles were also replaced, and the underside was coated with a rust inhibitor.
